start angular JS project in Visual Studio 2017 - best/cleanest results

Getting the hang of Angular JS, and using it in VS 2017.

Installed Node and the Angular CLI, and as a result, I have the option of building an Angular project right out of the box.

At first observation, it appears to be COMEDICALLY large. I suspect it's loading every conceivable tool I might ever use and then some.

There's any number of sites and pages that offer advice on starting an Angular site by hand, but they seem excessively manual-step and command-line based, and possibly resulting in not too different a final project result.

Considering at this point I'm only looking at playing with bare bones pages to get my hands dirty, is there a process that would result in a less daunting set of files? Is the out of the box Angular project more in line with what I'll need, or would building something more by hand (from an empty project, say) result in a cleaner project that'll still do what I need?
