How to uninstall a Linux partition that's always "busy"

I have a bit of a weird question. I'm trying to delete an old version of MySQL and install a new one. The old one is located at /var/lib/mysql, which is also a partition. The instructions to remove it recommend renaming it to /var/lib/mysql_old, but when I try to rename it, it says "device busy or in use". I think this is due to the fact that it's a partition. But it also gives the same message then when I try to unmount it.

But, I actually want the partition to have the same name, so I guess I shouldn't unmount it nor delete it. I've deleted all the files in it.

Maybe I should just leave it as is, and try the new install?
