How to implement @version(optimistic lock) in rest based api

I have used @version on a property in my class.

Step 1:user selects the data to be updated Step 2:selected data is loaded on the screen Step 3: user updates the data and confirms it to update in the db

Here the problem is in step 1 data is loaded. Now in rest api we dont store anything in session.

Then in step 3 i should not load the data again from db to effectively make use of @version. Then how can I update the data without loading from db and without using session
